Co-Flowering Species Richness Increases Pollinator Visitation to Apple Flowers

چکیده
Co-flowering plants can experience an array of interactions, ranging from facilitation to competition, the direction and strength which are often dependent on relative abundance diversity plant species involved foraging behavior their pollinators. Understanding interactions between plant–pollinator networks how they change over time is particularly important within agricultural systems, such as apples, that flower en masse also contain non-crop co-flowering both farm surrounding landscape. We determined degree overlap pollinator two varieties apple (Granny Smith Pink Lady) orchards wider vegetation matrix in apple-growing regions (Orange Bilpin) Australia. surveyed at key stages cropping cycle: before mass flowering; during king, peak late blooms; and, finally, once flowering had finished. Overall, we found considerable visitor assemblage apples orchard. The introduced honeybee (Apis mellifera) was most frequent all three types times Orange. However, Bilpin, a native stingless bee (Tetragonula carbonaria) A. mellifera were highly visitors, on- off-crop. Numerous bees, flies Lepidoptera commonly visited locations. native-bee visitation flowers positively correlated with richness (within orchard matrix); however, by bees decreased area landscape increased. Our study highlights importance maintaining diverse communities local increase support wide variety pollinators horticultural production systems.

Flowering Dynamics and Pollinator Visitation of Oilseed Echium (Echium plantagineum)
Echium (Echium plantagineum L.) is an alternative oilseed crop in summer-wet temperate regions that provides floral resources to pollinators. Its seed oil is rich in omega-3 fatty acids, such as stearidonic acid, which is desired highly by the cosmetic industry. Seeds were sown in field plots over three years in western Minnesota in spring (early-sown) or early summer (late-sown), and flower ab...
متن کاملProximity to Woodland and Landscape Structure Drives Pollinator Visitation in Apple Orchard Ecosystem
Landscapes of farms and adjacent areas are known to influence abundance of various arthropods such as pollinators in commercial agricultural ecosystems. In this context, we examined the effect of heterogeneous landscapes surrounding and including commercial apple orchards on pollinator visitation and foraging distance during bloom period from 2011 to 2013 in Pennsylvania. Our results showed tha...
متن کاملPollinator attractiveness increases with distance from flowering orchids.
Orchids are extraordinary among plants because many species are pollinated through sexual duplicity by producing flowers that mimic female insects to lure unsuspecting males. Previous work showed that sexual deception by the orchid Chiloglottis trapeziformis can have a negative impact on its wasp pollinator Neozeleboria cryptoides. We report that female wasps may be capable of mitigating the co...
متن کاملEffects of small-scale clustering of flowers on pollinator foraging behaviour and flower visitation rate
Plants often grow in clusters of various sizes and have a variable number of flowers per inflorescence. This small-scale spatial clustering affects insect foraging strategies and plant reproductive success. In our study, we aimed to determine how visitation rate and foraging behaviour of pollinators depend on the number of flowers per plant and on the size of clusters of multiple plants using D...

BACKGROUND AND AIMS This study examined the effect of plant traits and environmental factors on pollinator visitation in the winter-flowering Helleborus foetidus (Ranunculaceae) in three distant regions in the Iberian Peninsula. METHODS Geographical variation in floral visitor assemblage, plant traits and environmental factors were analysed during the flowering season. KEY RESULTS Differenc...
